Why Even The Fittest People Still Need Strength Training
Cardio fit but still getting injured? Discover why strength training is essential even for endurance athletes. Expert UK coaching advice.
We speak to people all the time who have a genuinely impressive cardiovascular engine. Good resting heart rate, strong max heart rate, solid heart rate variability. Their running, cycling or swimming is in a great place. And then you ask about strength training, and the answer is usually the same. Nothing, or barely anything.
Here is the thing. Once your engine is that good, there is only one place left that keeps giving you more. Strength and plyometrics. Eating well and training at the right weight for you both matter, but strength is the piece that keeps paying off long after your cardio has plateaued.
Over the years, we have had thousands of conversations with people who get injured and cannot understand why. We explain what is going on. We tell them what they need to change. And more often than not, they carry on running, swimming, cycling or whatever their sport is, without changing a thing. Running especially. It requires real balance, moving from one leg to the other, yet it is incredible how many people we meet who can barely do a lunge properly. Some athletes get away with it for years. But we do not think you can keep getting away with it forever, especially as you get older. And when the decline starts is different for everyone. We have coached twenty year olds with almost no structural stability, and sixty year olds who are naturally strong as anything. It really is individual. It is not about age.
The part that stands out most in these conversations is the denial. People ask for advice, get a genuinely good answer, and then talk themselves out of it with an opinion built on zero experience. If you did not want the answer, why ask the question in the first place? Usually, it is because deep down, people already know what they need.
So our message is simple. Strength training is not optional, and it might matter more than smashing out endless easy miles or grinding through another hard session. If your engine is already strong, strength is where the real gains are still waiting.
Happy training,
Pinnacle Team.
