Why Running With Others Makes You Faster, Happier and Less Likely to Quit

Discover how running with others improves speed, motivation & retention. Join our supportive UK running club community at Pinnacle Performance.

I started the Pinnacle Performance Running Club back in 2015 with just a few members turning up on a Monday evening. No fanfare. No big launch. Just a group of people who wanted to run with a bit of structure and support behind them.

Nearly a decade later, we're still going every Monday at 7 pm, based at Pinnacle Performance at Hamble Point Marina, and we're now running in conjunction with Netley Abbey Runners to bring even more people into the fold.

And the science? It's finally caught up with what I've always believed.

Why People Don't Join Running Clubs (And Why They Should)

One of the biggest things I hear from people thinking about joining is this: I'm not sure I'm good enough.

I want to be very clear about something. You are good enough. Whether you run a marathon in three hours or six hours, whether you've been running for twenty years or twenty weeks, there's a place for you here.

The Pinnacle Performance Running Club has always been built around one simple idea. No matter what ability you are, we support each other. The session is always structured to cater for varying levels. If you don't feel right on the day, that's fine. You reduce it, you adjust, you do what works for you. Nobody gets left behind.

That's not just a nice thing to say. It's actually what the research supports.

What the Research Says About Group Running

A 2025 randomised controlled trial found that group-based running significantly increased energy and decreased fatigue compared to running alone. Even more impressive, a large-scale analysis of over 200,000 London Marathon runners found that club-affiliated runners finished up to 40 minutes faster than non-affiliated runners across all age and gender categories.

Running club membership even appears to slow down the natural pace decline that comes with age. Coached group runners slow down less over time than solo runners. That's a remarkable finding and one that every runner over 40 should pay attention to.

The momentum is building everywhere. Strava's 2024 report noted a 59% global increase in running club participation and described run clubs as the new nightclubs, with users four times more likely to want to meet people through fitness than at a bar. Online interest in run clubs surged 33% in the past year in the UK alone.

The social benefits are just as compelling. 58% of survey respondents said they made new friends through fitness groups. Studies tracking over 800 runners found that the more people you run with, the more frequently you train. Accountability isn't just a buzzword. It's backed by data.

What a Coached Session Looks Like Versus a Casual Group Run

This is where the Pinnacle Performance Running Club is different from just meeting a few mates for a jog.

Every Monday evening follows a clear structure.

We start with a proper warm-up together. Not a gentle shuffle to the start line, but a real warm-up with running-specific drills. High knees, A skips, strides, mobility work. Research shows that a structured, dynamic warm-up improves performance in 79% of the criteria examined across studies and reduces soft tissue injury risk significantly. It also has a psychological priming effect, helping you shift mentally from whatever your day has thrown at you into a focused training state.

After the warm-up, we move into the main session. Every session is posted on the Wednesday before, so you know exactly what's coming. The main session takes place in a safe environment on the marina, which, if you've never trained there, is a genuinely brilliant place to run. Right on the water at the mouth of the River Hamble. One of the most unique training locations in the South of England.

After the session, it's home time. Job done.

The difference between this and a casual group run is structure, progression and feedback. A casual group gives you company. A coached session gives you company plus a plan that actually makes you better.

As the University of Derby put it in 2025, when people exercise as a group, they're likely to exercise more frequently and report higher levels of motivation and wellbeing.
